Ben in Zenless Zone Zero is an A rank Defense Agent who deals fire anomaly damage. Ben is a massive character who is very slow, and as he is a defense unit, specializes in providing shields and parry attacking to deal daze damage. In addition to providing a shield to reduce damage to his team, his additional ability also allows those shielded to receive a critical hit chance bonus.

Overview
Available on the standard banner and given as a free single copy after progressing in the story, Ben, the head of finance at Belobog Heavy Industries, is a defense unit that provides shields and buffs to the team. He has very slow movement and attack speed, but makes up in his ability to act as a daze unit thanks to his strong parry capability. Not only can he provide damage mitigation with his shield, but also provide a valuable crit rate buff with his shields, making him a solid option not only for applying daze to enemies, but also as a support agent. Below, you will find the best Defense builds for Ben, including the best W-Engines, Disc Drives, Stats, Skills, Bangboo, and Teams!
W-Engines
A - Spring Embrace
⭐ ATK
- Reduces DMG taken 7.5/8.5/9.5/10.5/12%. When attacked, the equipper's Energy Generation Rate increased by 10/11.5/13/14.5/16% for 12s. When the equipper switches off-field, this buff will be transferred to the new on-field character with its duration refreshed. Passive effects of the same name do not stack.
- This W-Engine will make Ben a greater supportive unit, giving his team an additional buff apart from just shielding and providing crit rate increase. This is more suited for a support defense build.
A - Original Transmorpher
⭐ HP
- Increases Max HP by 8/9/10/11/12.5%. When attacked, the equipper's Impact is increased by 10/11.5/13/14.5/16% for 12s.
- As Ben already deals a great amount of daze with his parry attacks, this will further increase his impact, thus further enhancing his ability to stun enemies after being attacked. This is more suited for a stun defense build
A - Big Cylinder
⭐ Defense
- Reduces DMG taken by 7.5/8.5/9.5/10.5/12%. After being attacked, the next attack to hit an enemy will trigger a critical hit and deal 600/690/780/870/960% of the equipper's DEF as additional DMG. This effect can be triggered once every 7.5s.
- This is Ben's signature W-Engine, and will increase his damage output by a considerable amount considering that you could build pure crit damage and ignore critical hit chance just to take advantage of this W-Engine. This is more suited for a damage defense build.
Disc Drives + Stats
Option 1 - "Guardian Grizzly"
4 Piece Swing Jazz
(2) Energy Regen increases by 20%.
(4) Launching a Chain Attack or Ultimate increases all squad members' DMG by 15% for 12s. Passive effects of the same name do not stack.
2 Piece Soul Rock
(2) Increases DEF by 16%.
Main Stats: IV. DEF | V. DEF | VI. Energy Regen or Impact
Sub stats in order of priority:
1. DEF% | 2. Crit Rate or Crit Damage | 3. Flat Def
This build focuses on a supportive tank role, with the increased energy regen Ben will be able to provide more shields with his EX Special, and provide an attack buff when he executes a chain attack. The increased defense helps provide stronger shields. You can opt for Impact on the VI piece in order to increase the daze he deals with his EX Special parry.
Option 2 - "Bear Bash!"
4 Piece Shockstar Disco
(2) Increases Impact by 6%.
(4) Basic Attacks, Dash Attacks, and Dodge Counters, inflict 20% more Daze upon the main target.
2 Piece Swing Jazz
(2) Energy Regen increases by 20%.
Main Stats: IV. Def | V. Def | VI. Energy Regen or Impact
Sub stats in order of priority:
1. Def% | 2. Crit Rate or Crit Damage | 3. Flat Def
This build is more suited for a stunner type Ben, increasing his Daze capability even further beyond just his parries by increasing his basic, dash, and doge counters.
Skill Priority
ALWAYS PRIOIRITZE CORE SKILL FIRST!!!
1. Ben's special should be top priority as not only will it be used a lot to provide shields, but it also increases the DMG and Daze of all of the variations.
2. If using Swing Electro, you will be using Ben's chain attack a lot, and regardless of rather or not you're using Swing Electro, Ben's chain attack is quite good, and will likely be used more than the below skills.
3. Useful for when you're switching to ben from assist, and this will be used more often in combat than the Basic and Dodge attack.
4. Ben will not have a lot of time on field due to his slow speed and attack, and even when he is, you're likely just going to be using his EX Special instead.
5. Similar to the basic attack, as Ben is not on field often, his dodge won't be used much if not at all, so keep this as bottom priority.
Bangboo
S - Rocketboo
Key Trait - When there are 2 or more Fire Attribute characters in your squad: Bangboo Chain Attack inflicts 100% more Anomaly Buildup.
For Fire centric teams, this will make it much easier to apply Burn, making team builds that rely on applying burn much easier to achieve. And since I argue that Ben and Koleda should always be together if you plan to use Ben, this is a very good Bangboo to have.
A - Cryboo
Key Trait - When there 2 or more Fire Attribute characters in your squad: Bangboo Chain Attack inflicts 60% more Anomaly Buildup.
A weaker version of Rocketboo, but will still be incredibly valuable for Fire teams.
Optimal Team Comp
This mono fire team, consisting of Ben, Koleda, and Soldier 11, not only ensures that you meet all the requirements for additional abilities, but also forms a powerful combination where Koleda and Ben work together, with Koleda receiving enhanced attacks when paired with Ben. When Ben's Shield from Core Passive: Guardian is active, his CRIT Rate is increased by 16%. With Koleda and Ben, stunning enemies becomes easy, and Soldier 11 capitalizes on this by dealing increased fire damage to stunned enemies, creating excellent synergy within the team.
Overall Thoughts
While Ben may be ranked lowly in our Tier List, that in no way means he has no use when built properly and setup with the right team comp. He can act as a stun unit or a support unit, making him versatile in team comps that need both but only have one slot available. While his attack and move speed is very slow, he should not be used as an on field attacker, but switched to when he has enough energy in order to use his EX Special to not only apply shields, but parry attacks to deal good daze damage to help stun your enemies.
